We like to think of ourselves as Jane Austen scholars. Here are some quotes we have read from her works that have been analyzed to fit current situations. Would love to hear your thoughts!
“Half the sum of attraction on either side might have been enough, for he had nothing to do, and she had hardly anybody to love.”
Best describes the couple you don’t understand. She’s the girl who has given up and the guy who has been around the block too long to care anymore.
“a man who had nothing but himself to recommend him…”
A man who is arrogant, loves himself too much, and doesn’t have a good rep. Girls, we have dated one of these, or a few.
“She felt that she could so much more depend upon the sincerity of those who sometimes looked or said a careless or hasty thing, than of those whose presence of mind never varied, whose tongue never slipped.”
Watch the ones who are always quiet and disciplined with their speech. They might be hiding something. Others with word diarrhea might prove to be more trustworthy since they usually just speak how they feel.
“We certainly do not forget you so soon as you forget us. It is perhaps our fate rather than our merit. We cannot help ourselves. We live at home, quiet, confined, and our feelings prey upon us. You are forced on exertion. You have always a profession, pursuits, business of some sort or other, to take you back into the world immediately; and continual occupation and change soon weaken impressions.”
Not to say girls have nothing to do now but to sit at home and cry over men, but still, we can’t help ourselves. We can have an amazing job, great girlfriends and a full life of hobbies and events. But when we fall in love and lose it, the ghosts of our past loves continue to haunt us throughout our experiences.
From Sense and Sensibility
“When she was called a beautiful girl, truth was less violently outraged than usually happens.”
Beautiful women get into more trouble simply because they can. Honest women know they can be honest because their looks and beauty act as a cushion for the victim’s pain.
“I want no proof of their affection...but of their engagement.”
No one cares to see a couple happily in love now. We just want to see the ring, the wedding invite and venue, the dress. Show us valor, excess, the diamonds— not the “true love.”
“She expected from other people the same opinions and feelings as her own, and she judged of their motives by the immediate effects of their actions on herself.”
I’m sure as you read this someone popped up in your head. Or— you are the person you thought of. Do not expect much from people— that is how you’ll get disappointed. Not everyone is like you!
“He gave...encouraging assurances which reached her ear but could not enter her heart.”
Sometimes, the words of a serious nice man cannot penetrate us. We hear them, but we can and won’t ever feel them like the ones who never fulfilled their empty promises.
From Northanger Abbey
“Her heart was affectionate; her disposition cheerful and open, without conceit or affectation of any kind--her manners just removed from the awkwardness and shyness of a girl; her person pleasing, and when in good looks, pretty--and her mind about as ignorant and uninformed as the female mind at seventeen usually is.”
Every jewish girl from 18-23 who is unmarried.
“ She had neither beauty, genius, accomplishment, nor manner.”
Describes the “simple girl” who gets the “amazing guy.”
“A woman, especially, if she has the misfortune of knowing anything should conceal it as well as she can.”
Ignorance is bliss. They don’t like it if you know more than them.
From Pride and Prejudice
“She had been barbarously used by them all...nothing could console and nothing appease her. Nor did that day wear out her resentment.”
Best describes every single girl over a certain age. Takes an extraordinary guy to change this mindset.
“There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and everyday confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of either merit or sense.”
My #mood all day everyday. 🤪
“Young people are seldom withheld by immediate want of fortune from entering into engagement with each other.”
Money marries money. You’re successful in business? FLAUNT IT! Daddy got you a new Range Rover? You drive that car everywhere. Your rich husband will follow.
“I have never desired your good opinion and you have bestowed it most unwillingly.”
Replying to every grandmother after being lectured on why they are still single or too picky.
“It was gratifying to have unconsciously inspired so strong an affection.”
When the creepy awkward guy sends you a friends request/slides into your Dms.
"How much I shall have to tell!"
"And how much I shall have to conceal!”
When a girl sees her friends for GNO and has the tea.
“Neither her virtue nor her understanding would preserve her from falling an easy prey.”
Women with the softest hearts end up being eaten. Be a bitch, be respected.
“My good qualities are under your protection, and you are to exaggerate them as much as possible.”
Single Girl’s speech to her matchmaker when discussing possible prospects.
"A woman is not to marry a man merely because she is asked or because he is attached to her and can write a tolerable letter.”
Do not settle. This is your partner— take it seriously. Figure out what you need and find someone with those qualities. Looks and money go— find your best friend who worships you at your worst.
“she has been taught nothing useful, and is too young and too simple to have acquired anything herself.”
We all know her.
“She had the comfort of appearing very polite while feeling very cross.”
A True diplomat. Every girl when told “Soon for you!”
“Warmth and tenderness of heart, with an affectionate, open manner, will beat all the clearness of head in the world for attraction.”
Being vulnerable gets you everywhere. Meaning in love. Anywhere else, well my friend, you’re screwed.
“not always listening, but always agreeing….”
Young Wives who marry controlling, insecure men who dictate what they wear, eat, say.
